Yes, you can still see your family doctor!

You can also choose to see a Nurse Practitioner as your primary care provider as an alternative to a family Physician.

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A Primary Care Nurse Practitioner is a Nurse with specialized education and skills that can work both independently and collaboratively in a variety of health care settings. NP’s can initiate treatments, diagnose diseases, disorders and conditions, prescribe medications and order lab tests, x-rays and other diagnostic tests within their scope of practice. NP’s provide a comprehensive approach to health care.

What kind of health-care services do nurse practitioners provide?
NPs provide a wide range of direct care services to people throughout the health care continuum. In addition to treating illnesses, they teach individuals and their families about healthy living and disease management. NPs integrate medical and nursing knowledge.  NPs are advocates for their patients, they are teachers, leaders who incorporate evidenced based practice.
Do nurse practitioners replace other health-care professionals? Will I still be able to see my doctor?

NPs work in collaboration with other health-care providers. They are part of an interdisciplinary team that includes registered nurses, physicians, physiotherapists and others. While seeing an NP, you can still see your family doctor or any other health-care provider.  You also have the opportunity of choosing to see a Nurse Practitioner as your primary care provider as an alternative to a family Physician.

What is a Holistic Approach?

NPs are health-care providers who care for patients by taking a holistic approach:

  • Addressing individual needs relating to their physical and mental health
  • Provides health promotion for a person to lead a healthier lifestyle.
  • Engages in teaching people how to manage chronic illness.
  • Focusing on how an illness affects a person’s life and the people around them.
  • Gathering medical histories and performing physical exams.
Where can we find nurse practitioners?

NPs work in diverse areas throughout our health care system such as:

  • Family Health Teams.
  • Hospitals (outpatient clinics, emergency rooms and other speciality. areas for e.g. Neurology, Obstetrics.)
  • NP-Led clinics.
  • Sexual Health Clinics.
  • Community Care, Health-Care Centres, Physician offices and in patient homes.
  • Corporate or private care clinics.
  • Nursing Homes.
  • Travel Clinics.
Why might I need a Gut Health Assessment?

New medical research now correlates that some chronic illnesses are linked to autoimmune conditions, Autism, Neurologic & Mental Health Conditions.
